Summary:

The research project we propose here is concerned with the control of the equations of fluid dynamics. Specifically, we intend to solve some very important open problems concerningcontrollability and stabilizability of both the Navier-Stokes and magnetohydrodynamic equations. For instance, we shall deal with the problem of exact internal (or boundary) controllability of the magnetohydrodynamic equations by control action exerted only in the hydrodynamic part of thes ystem. Also we shall study the problem of stabilizability of the equilibrium solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations by Stratonovich noise controllers and by internal or boundary feedback controllers. The solutions of the proposed problems would have a strong impact on the understanding of the dynamics of fluid flow and of the way in which we can influence it. They would also have interesting practical applications in meteorology, oceanography, plasma heating by radioand microwaves, plasma confinement by magnetic pinching in toroidal installations, active ionospheric heating by high-frequency radio waves, and satellite communications.
